When is Mother's Day?
In the UK, we celebrate Mother's Day at a different time of year to our pals in the US. This is because our Mother's Day is based around Christian observance of Lent. Mother's Day comes from Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday.
In 2024, Mother's Day takes place on Sunday 10th March - earlier than it often is, so don't let it catch you off guard!
Mother's Day, or Mothers' Day?
Where to put the apostrophe in Mother's Day is something we all struggle with, because it depends on whether the day is about celebrating every mother, or each individual mother within her own family.
While all mothers should be celebrated on Mother's Day, it is generally considered grammatically correct for it to be "Mother's Day", a celebration of the singular mother rather than a collection of mothers.
Obviously there's nothing to stop you from celebrating more than one mother in your life, this is just the punctuation that's widely used - the more mothers to celebrate, the merrier!
What message should I write in my Mother's Day card?
First things first, write from the heart. You can jazz up any of these messages to make them feel more unique to you and your mum, you can mix several messages together, or use it as a beginning point to inspire you to write your own personal message.
Do what feels right to you and for your relationship with your mum, and address her in the way you usually do, whether she's your Mum, Mother, Mumma, Mummy, Mama, or Mumsy.
Don't write an overly floral message if that isn't how you talk with your mum day-to-day, it's not going to sound like you and will make the card feel like it isn't genuine.
If in doubt, go short and sweet with your message, as you can't really go wrong with that!
